Let me tell you something about the Albanian music. First of all, it has different influences, and it differ by region. Say for example, you will listen more traditional songs in south Albania, and in Kosovo or north Albania you have songs with turk or balkan influence.
In the 1920s thought, great Fan S. Noli has also produced classical music. He was back then a very popular person, and a American-Albanian politician, author, historian, scholar, and prime minister of Albania in 1924. You can read more about him on Wikipedia: Fan S. Noli
Anyway, talking about the different folk songs in Albania, you have 2 major groups, the Ghegs of the north and the Tosks in the south. Where the north songs are more like heroic, like Dervish Shaqa ( Who is from Kosovo ), the south songs are more about love, work, weddings and alike.
Let's become more specific.
Northern Albania songs
This means all kind of songs from the Ghegs, and are often sung poetry. A lot is about great Skanderbeg, which is known for his struggle against the turks in the 15th century. He is seen as the Albanian national hero.
Very often the lahuta is used, an Albanian instrument, but replaced around Diber and Tetove ( Maceodonia ) by the cifteli, with only two-strings. He most known artist which is using a cifteli, was Dervish Shaqa.
Southern Albania songs
The south Tosk music is like I said, more soft and gentle. The best example are all the songs from the city Vlore. Let's take a phrase from the author Kim Burton who said about it: "This polyphonic vocal music is full of power that "stems from the tension between the immense emotional weight it carries, rooted in centuries of pride, poverty and oppression, and the strictly formal, almost ritualistic nature of its structure"
Instruments used are for example clarinets, violins, and also the lahute. The most popular singer is Eli Fara, which represents the city of Korçe, but also Fatime Sokoli was a singer, which might never be forgotten in Albania.
